Fallowfield Tennis Club plays its cards right to find bridge club a new home

Manchester’s oldest tennis club has teamed up with the city’s oldest bridge fraternity in a deal that secures both their futures.
Manchester Bridge Club (MBC) put its cards on the table and signed a leasing agreement with Fallowfield Bowling & Lawn Tennis Club to rent clubhouse facilities for its new base.
MBC had been searching for a permanent home after its longstanding HQ in Palatine Road was due for sell-off to Christie Hospital – and a temporary location in Parrs Wood had proven unsuitable.Former Lancashire and India cricketer Farokh Engineer is a club regular and film idol and renowned bridge player Omar Sharif also visited MBC. The club numbers no fewer than six world champions, including current women’s title-holder Catherine Draper.
“Fallowfield’s facilities are just the job for us - conveniently located, plenty of parking and great clubhouse facilities,” said MBC owner David Debbage. “We were seeking to relocate at the end of last year and visited Fallowfield to check out their provision.“It’s sad to leave Palatine Road, which had been our HQ since we formed nearly 40 years ago but our 150 members, who meet Mondays to Thursdays, need somewhere to play – and we have recently expanded our bridge programme by launching beginners’ classes in a bid to attract young players.”
FBLTC spokesman Michael Perry said: “Our newly refreshed clubhouse has the space to accommodate as many playing pairs as a leading bridge club like MBC – ranked among Europe’s leading - can deal us.“The agreement meets both our needs perfectly. The clubhouse is used regularly through the week at what are usually quite periods and MBC has found a centrally sited new home.”
The leasing deal secures valuable income for Fallowfield, formed in 1854 and believed to be the oldest tennis hub in Britain, at a time when the LTA-registered club is planning major refurbishment of its three premier standard floodlit synthetic courts.“Regular upkeep of our playing surfaces is critical in ensuring we provide the quality players demand in what is a highly competitive marketplace locally.”
